Halloween Costume Masks

Halloween masks, although this was not what they were called at the time, is believed to have started with the Celts. Their celebration of the New Year began on November 1st and the eve of the New Year on October 31st was believed to be a night when the spirits of those who had passed could return to Earth.

The beliefs included fear of these returning spirits as they were thought to come back only for causing problems for the living. The first masks were worn to keep the ghosts from recognizing the living. They believed the masks made the spirits think they were spirits as well. The early masks were made from animal skins and heads.

Masks today include a diverse collection of everything from witches, ghosts and goblins to Freddy Krueger, Jason, Batman, Wonder Woman, werewolves, zombies and more.
